Hi friends! I have something fun to share with you today. For those of you that don’t know, I am a licensed hair stylist and makeup artist. Over the years in the industry, I have tried a ton of different hair and makeup products. Some professional products are to die for and worth every penny to me. Others? Maybe not so much. I am all about saving money where I can and saving on some products so I can splurge on others. Here are my Top 5 Favorite Drugstore Beauty Products Right Now!
1. Dove Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo Walmart $3.94
I pretty much run on coffee and dry shampoo, y’all! Dry shampoo is my saving grace for stretching days between shampoos. I usually only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, thanks to this dear friend! I also have fine hair. I am lucky I have a good bit of it but it’s still very fine with an almost “too soft” texture sometimes when freshly washed. Bobby pins want to slide right out! So I love even using dry shampoo on my freshly washed, clean, dry hair to add some texture, volume and grip! If you are new to dry shampoo period, dear lord have you been missing out. Dry shampoo is essentially a fine, aerosol powder spray. The number one complaint I hear is that it can come out white and can make darker hair look ashy. This can be true but I have a couple of tips to help! First, shake shake shake! Shake that can before using! This may sound obvious or may not seem important but it can make a huge difference in your application. Second, allow the product time to do its job. It’s “job” is to absorb excess oil. So, I like to spray my roots (straight down my part then spraying in 1 inch sections running down each side of my head, then my hairline and crown area) then let it sit! It will probably look ashy at this point if you have darker hair but that’s ok! Now, do your makeup, fold some laundry, watch yourself an episode of Real Housewives, just let it marinate some! Then I go back in and massage into my scalp. At this point, it should be pretty well blended but if you are still feeling a little ashy for whatever reason, whip out the blow dryer and hit those ashy areas with a brush and the dryer. That will take care of any residual. I cannot even begin to tell you guys how many top dollar, professional salon dry shampoos I have tried as a licensed cosmetologist. Are they great? Sure! Is this under $5 one just as great, YES!
2. CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara in Very Black Walmart $6.95
This is an oldie but a goody! I used this stuff years ago and kind of forgot about it. I had been using another drugstore mascara and was happy with how it made my lashes looked but I kept struggling with fall out through out the day. Black mascara flakes or smudge marks under my eyes were a daily battle. I decided to give this ol’ trusty a whirl and oh my gosh-least amount of fall out ever! This is huge for me, as that has always been one of my biggest makeup complaints, even with higher-end products. I like to curl my lashes, one eye at a time and apply the mascara immediately after, locking in that curl as much as possible. Do the same to the other eye. Then back to the first. I like to do at least 2 coats but it layers on really well so I will do up to 5 if I have the time and they just keep getting better with each coat! Trust me!
3. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation Walmart $10.97
Foundation is something I have struggled with the most in the past year or so. I have always had incredibly oily skin. So I have always been drawn to any kind of makeup (professional or drugstore) that catered to oily skin. But since having my daughter, I haven’t really liked the way any foundations have looked. However, I do struggle with a lot of redness and occasional breakouts so I was still desiring a good bit of coverage. It finally dawned on me that my skin has changed. It’s different now. I don’t have incredibly oily skin any more. I now have combination skin that can get oily at times. But now, it may even have some dry areas. So even though this is a matte product, I absolutely love it! I love that it goes on super smooth with great coverage and a little bit goes a long way. You guys know I’m all about saving money and making things last! Hands down, my absolute favorite thing about this stuff is the staying power. This foundation lasts all day and then some! Even after going for a run at the end of the day. It also comes in “Pro-Glow” versus the matte for a dewier finish, something I would never have attempted with my excessive oil but now, I may give this one a try too!
4. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector Broad Spectrum SPF 25 Walmart $11.97
I have always struggled with dark under eye circles and this stuff has saved me! I have very deep set eyes so in addition to darker pigmentation around my eye sockets, the depth of them can also create a lot of dark shadows. This concealer applicator is my favorite! Easy to brush on and spread. I apply it under/across the entire length of my eyes, the inner corners then drag and blend down into a triangle shape. This helps to keep everything super blended and natural looking. I buff out the concealer with a small foundation brush. Then I use much larger blending brush to blend across my cheekbones. Total personal preference but I like to do my concealer after my foundation. It eliminates my dark circles and reflects light.
5. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Walmart $7.97
I use this sunscreen year around but find myself using it even more with warmer days approaching. This is the lightest, most non-greasy feeling sunscreen I have ever used. My mom actually got my hooked on it and now I can’t stop using it. I usually hate the thought of lathering up with tradition sunscreen. It’s thick, smells, difficult to completely rub in and I always feel like it’s clogging my pores. Not anymore, folks. This gem is a total game changer you will thank for later for it!
